We finally got a pretty good storm. The weatherman predicted a blizzard and we got one. All the weather websites and the radio predicted 4 to 6", maybe a little more right at the coast. We got way more than six inches, probably three times that amount. When the wind blows that hard, the drifts are everywhere and depth is a matter of location. Anyway it was a big rollicking storm with lots of wind that pounded us all day.
I made sourdough bread, flat bread and rolls. If you haven't made flat bread before you should. It is simple and has a lot of uses. We use it as wraps and premade pizza shells. After you make a bread dough and it has proofed, instead of panning it all up, save some dough to make flat bread. Heat a cast iron skillet on medium while you roll out a blob of dough a little bigger than a golf ball. Use a rolling pin and roll it out until it is roughly the size of the skillet. If you are using the right size blob this will be thin, about like noodles. Flour the surface you roll the dough out on to keep it from sticking. Flour the top too and the rolling pin. When the skillet is hot, lay a dough round in it and wait a minute or so and flip it. It will have bubbled up. Cook both sides. If your skillet is the right temp, your flat bread will have a few light brown spots, some bubbles and be soft and plyable. Cool on a cooling rack. Repeat the process, making adustments in temp and cooking time. You will figure it out. It is pretty forgiving.
If you manage enough self restraint and any flat bread survives the intial feeding frenzy, try this pizza. It is patterned after Pat's very popular barbecue chicken pizza. I like it because it is simple, makes no dirty dishes and tastes great.
Put flat bread on a piece of aluminum foil and add barbecue sauce.
Top with leftover meat, (anything in the fridge that you are not yet afraid to eat)
Cover with cheese and put in hot oven until the cheese melts.
No mess, easy, delicious-- my type of meal.
While I was making bread, Kris made a pork roast and twice baked potatoes. It was my turn to do dishes so while fluffy the sourdough starter took her sweet time proofing the bread dough, I actually did something productive. I generally prefer to read and be worthless, but when push comes to shove I will help with cleaning up. In this case Kris finally pushed and shoved me over to the dish pan and convinced me my general well being was dependent on cleaning up the mess I had made. Armed with a new found zeal for cleaning, I splashed away and looked out the window and watched for a break in the storm. I was planning to use the snow blowing gambit to get out of the dishpan, but the storm raged on and I did dishes most of the day.
It is clear and fairly calm this morning so I'll go out and blow the snow out of the driveway and road. Since it's Kris's turn to do dishes, there is no real urgency to get out and start.
